WSJ - "Brazil's Telebras: Three Firms Advance in Bid to Build Satellite"

The Wall Street Journal - 03/05/2013

RIO DE JANEIRO--Brazilian state-run telecommunications company Telebras late Friday selected three firms to participate in a tender to build a new defense and communications satellite for Latin America's largest country.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Space Systems/Loral and Thales Alenia Space will advance to the final round, Telebras said.

The satellite will be used for defense purposes, Telebras said. But the satellite also will deliver high-speed internet services to remote areas of Brazil, where options such as cable aren't widely available, Telebras said.

The final step will select which firm will build the satellite, according to Telebras's specifications, and Telebras will operate it, the company said.
